Day One and Two of my 365 Day Sketch Challenge
Yesterday I started a new #Kick365 sketching challenge to sketch people in a looser more gestural style. It’s my third 365 day challenge.
A couple of months ago I finished my second 365 day Kick in the Creatives sketching challenge of sketching people. The first one was to sketch people from photos, tv, videos and from life, and when that was completed, I did 365 days of urban sketching people from life. I was planning on doing 365 days of buildings, but then realised I much prefer sketching people. So why fight it?
I’ve already been sketching people daily for the Drawing Earthsworld Challenge and Dylan Sara’s Advent 10 minute portrait challenge. I’ve been enjoying getting into this daily people sketching habit, so that’s what pushed me over the edge to commit to another 365 days challenge.

Day One Self-Portrait from Photo
I made the decision to start my 365 day people sketching challenge, and officially kicked it off with a self portrait from a photo I took today.

I think I’m going to do the same self portrait at the beginning of every month to see how my techniques progress and my style develops.
Day Two
After doing a couple of Dylan’s 10 Minute Pose on Youtube, I did the latest Drawing Earthsworld Challenge from Facebook.

Then I hopped over to the Museum app which features a myriad of inspiration photos to sketch from. I loved this one because of the angle of the chin, and it turned out better than I thought.
Then I went for a walk to the promenade and there was a couple leaning on the rails looking out at the water. I sketched them from a bench just opposite, and then painted in once I got back home.
Inspiration for People Sketches
Dylan Sara is hosting his live advent 10 minute sketching sessions on YouTube each day in December leading up to Christmas.
The Sketching Earthsworld Challenge is an ongoing event, but if you’re not inspired by the photo references they choose, you can always head over to the Earthsworld Instagram account … for some weird and wonderful photos. Hosted by an Oregon based photographer focused on candid portraits at county fairs.
I’ve been doing a lot of studio work recently, but I really need to get out and about for more urban sketching people.
