Day 158 of sketching people during a trip to Malia Beach on the Greek Island of Crete. A mix of solitary figures on a page, and one compilation that takes a little bit of deciphering because one of my sketch subjects got up and walked away.

Two Trains, Two Planes, and a Taxi ride to reach our Greek destination of Crete. I managed a couple of sketches of people I encountered along the journey. I don’t think night flights are ideal for getting a lot of sketching done.

Scouring the internet for iconic but not twee photographs that I can use as reference to practice some ink and wash Greek Island postcard sketches using loose lines and watercolour.

I swatched all the colours in my Daniel Smith Palette with their Naples Yellow, to see what useful shades I could create for my next summer Adventure. The most useful Naples Yellow colour mixes I created were subdued greens, and toned down pinks and reds.

Greek hospitality is alive and well on Leros, an island in the Dodecanese chain untouched by mass tourism. A couple of nights here was enough to make us realize we needed to come back.

The picturesque Greek Island of Symi is next door to Rhodes, and is famous for it’s pretty harbour and their tiny red panfried shrimp, that are eaten whole.

Known for sponge diving and rock climbing, Kalymnos also has beaches on its western coast that overlook the small island of Telendos. It’s where the longest sandy beach is located.

The ferry that connects the Greek Island of Kos to Kalymnos departs from the Mastichari Ferry port. We got there by bus, and spent a few hours in a taverna waiting for our ferry.

We took a day trip to Kalymnos to explore the eastern coastline and spend the day in Vathy, and discover an off-the-beaten path beach where the Greeks gather for family Sunday.
