Day One Hundred and Sixty-Seven of Sketching People

Continuing on with day 167 of my #Kick365 sketching challenge to draw people in ink and watercolour, with a collection of people sketches during our day trip to the Greek Island of Symi.

We had a couple of nights on Rhodes before taking the ferry to Athens, and we decided to take a day trip to Symi. We’ve been here before a couple of times and really liked it, and wondered if it had changed much since our last visit.

We took a water taxi to Agios Nikolaos Beach so that we could spend a couple of hours chilling and snorkelling. It’s peak summer months, so the beach was quite busy, and the sun beds seemed really close together.

So I sketched groups of people rather than individuals. The first one was more successful than the second. In the first sketch there’s a clear focal point and I used a single colour to fill in the background people. But in the second sketch I used colour on all of it, and that’s made the image a little confusing to decipher.

It was so steaming hot today – easily in the high 90s F – so I didn’t get another chance to sketch. The main port town was extremely busy. We’d only been here out of season before, and it was mellow and chilled. August is definitely not that. It was hectic and busy, with different ferries and day boats delivering passengers from neighbouring islands. When we arrived, we were dropped off at a ferry port at the far end of the bay, and neither of us remember that being there before. So we think the town has expended to deal with the influx of big and small ferries.

It was nice to visit Symi again, but I don’t think we’ll be coming back.
