Category: 365 Days of Sketching People #3
Urban Sketching People at the Cafe (Day 96)
A quick people sketch at the cafe, and swatching a muted shade of green, that morphed into a beautiful skin tone shade using natural sienna, cobalt turquoise light, and opera pink. I also ruminate on how I sketch people and how they see themselves, and how those are two very different things when I sketch my version of reality.
Urban Sketching People at Sol De Inverno in Tavira (Day 95)
Day 95 of sketching people. Today I sketched groups at the monthly Sol de Inverno event in Tavira. I used a different easel today, made out of an A5 watercolour book cover, and it worked really well.
Cafe Sketches and Live Sketching Event at A Borboleta Art Gallery in Tavira (Day 94)
Day 94 of sketching people at a live sketching event at a local art gallery. I faced the dilemma of wanting to add colour to my sketches but having to wait for the page to dry before I could begin another sketch.
Urban Sketching in Tavira Plaza (Day 93)
Day 93 of urban sketching people at Tavira Plaza. Ink and Tonal Shading sketches on location, and discovered that if I leave the Tombow water soluable ink to “cure”, you can add watercolour on top of it and it doesn’t bleed or spread.
Urban Sketching People at the Cafe onto Coffee-Stained Pages (Day 91)
Day 91 of urban sketching people at the cafe. Sketched onto a watercolour paper background of coffee stains. I also prepped some page for my next cafe sketching trip, experimenting with different ways to apply the coffee and vary the patterns created.
Urban Sketching People at the Cafe onto Coffee-Stained Pages (Day 90)
Day Ninety of sketching people in ink and watercolour. Today I sketched at the cafe, using pages with coffee stains on them. One spread used coffee stain rings, and the other page was messier coffee stain splashes. Both effects are really conducive to sketching loose ink lines and and expressive approach to adding watercolour.
A Sunny Sunday Sketching more Beach Bums (Day 89)
Day 89 of sketching people in ink and watercolour. A day sketching a group of Beach Bums, and experimenting with the type of expressive effects I’m able to create by adding salt to damp watercolour.
Urban Sketching at the Pétanque Game (Day 87)
Day 87 of sketching people in ink and watercolour. A quick loose sketch of one of the local boules players, and then a loose application of watercolours.
Urban Sketching at the Cafe and Boardwalk (Day 86)
Day 86 of sketching people. The calm of sketching people at the cafe when you know they’re not going to move much vs. the urgency of sketching people on a bench when you fear they may get up to walk at any minute means you create different line styles. Tight vs. loose.
Using Toni Burt’s Loose Lines and Dynamic Watercolour approach to Sketch People (Day 85)
Day 85 of sketching people. I did a couple of different versions of a sketch based on a photo of a women I took in London. The first version was uninspiring and not the least bit memorable, but my second version used a loose line and dynamic painting style inspired by Australian artist Toni Burt.
Urban Sketches at Afternoon Tea, the Steering Alignment Garage, and on the Boardwalk (Day 82, 83, and 84)
Day 82, 83, and 84 of sketching people at the cafe, garage, and on the boardwalk. Not a huge output, but took the opportunity of sketching in the cracks of life. Making the most of time I spent waiting around. Better than doom-scrolling.
Urban Sketch of my MIL resting on the couch (Day 81)
Day 81 of sketching people in ink and watercolour. A detailed sketch of my MIL relaxing on the couch.
Urban Sketching People at the Railway Station and on the Train (Day 79 and 80)
Day 79 and 80 of sketching people. Urban Sketching people during my train journeys around the UK. I sketched at Kings Cross, Doncaster, and Hull, on the train, and at the cafe. Experimented with some limited palette compositions.
Urban Sketching People and Statues in London (Day 76, 77, and 78)
Day 76, 77, and 78 of sketching people. Urban Sketching people and statues I encountered in London, and sketching the audience at the Royal Albert Hall during a concert. Merging colour and monochromatic sketches to increase the focal point, add depth, and simplify the composition.
Urban Sketching People at the Airport and on the Plane (Day 75)
Day 75 of sketching people. Urban Sketching people in the departures long of Faro Airport, and on the plane from the front row – so lots of toilet queue sketches. Experimenting with different compositions using an outlined oblong shape in the background to tie people and objects together on an A6 page layout.
Page of Portraits and a Continuous Line Sketch (Day 74)
Day 74 of sketching people and also the first day of One Week 100 People. Got more continuous line practice in by sketching a crowd scene at a cash point machine from a photo. And a page of random portraits for skin tone practice.
Urban Sketching People at the Cafe and Airport Sketch from a Photo (Day 73)
Day 73 of sketching people. Got some continuous line practice in by sketching a crowd scene at an airport, from a photo. And a couple of urban sketches at the local cafe.
Urban Sketching People at the Cafe (Day 72)
Day 72 of sketching people. Urban Sketching people at the cafe at the end of the street. Playing around with compositions to leave enough negative space so my sketches can breathe. Also added text, social commentary, and overheard conversations to turn these urban sketches into reportage.
Urban Sketching People at Cafes and a Mobile Screening Unit (Day 71)
Day 71 of sketching people. A morning urban sketching people at cafes and a mobile screening unit in Tavira. Experimenting with different backgrounds and page layout compositions.
Urban Sketch of a local Pétanque Match and some Portrait Sketches (Day 70)
Day 70 of sketching people. Urban sketch in ink and watercolour of some players taking part in a Pétanque match in the village. Also a couple of portrait sketches to finish of my latest A6 people sketching sketchbook.
Urban Sketching Day out to Ayamonte Spain to Sketch the Town and it’s People (Day 69)
Day 69 of sketching people. Traveled to Ayamonte Spain for a day of urban sketching. I sketched people at the cafe, a few buildings and an iconic statue in the square in old town. My watercolour pencils saved the day, and I used this day trip to experiment with page layout ideas and using spot colour for areas of focal point.
Quick Urban Sketches at the Cafe (Day 68)
Day 68 of sketching people. Urban Sketching at a local cafe at the end of the street. Combining people sitting in different parts of the cafe together at a table, and experimenting with compositions for a reportage post.
Using Different Art Materials and Sketching Styles to Vault a Creative Hurdle (Day 67)
Day 67 of sketching people. Sketching from photos to get a jolt of inspiration after hitting a creative lull. I used a different style for one sketch, and incorporated different art materials for the other. I also show how I created my watercolour pencil stubbies, so that they’re an ideal size to take urban sketching.
Urban Sketching People at Tavira Plaza (Day 66 part 2)
Day 66 of sketching people. Urban Sketching afternoon at the Tavira Plaza to capture people in ink and watercolour. Experimented with a V-shaped Composition, tonal shading with a spot colour background, and creating depth with desaturated colours.
