Day Ten to Thirteen of my 365 Day Sketch Challenge

Continuing with four more days of my #Kick365 sketching challenge to draw people in ink and watercolour. I was able to sketch every day but didn’t get around to posting the activity.

Drawing Earthsworld Challenge

Before heading off a a quick pre-Christmas getaway to Córdoba in Spain, I got up early, especially to do the Drawing Earthsworld Challenge from Facebook. I was going to skip it, but his stripy shirt endeared me to him, plus his expression was pure attitude.

I like the mix of neutral colour hair and clothing, against the colour in his face.

Sketching from Photos

While we were away in Cordoba, I fully intended to do some urban sketching, but we were too busy visiting the tapas bars, exploring the old town, and seeing the sights, to get my sketch book out and ink a few people.

But I made sure to take as many candid shots of people as possible to use as inspiration to sketch once I was back in our accommodation.

Sketches of People in Cordoba

There’s a bit of a mix of styles going on, basically because some of the sketches were done at a leisurely pace, and others were a bit hurried. I quickened the pace on some of them on purpose, to replicate the feeling of having to hurry – so that it felt more like an urban sketching scenario.

Can you guess which are laboured and which are against-the-clock? The looser the style, the quicker I was sketching.

Situational Sketching Style

My natural sketching style is more precise and detail oriented, but I have been coveting a looser style of sketching for years. But maybe I need to stop fighting against my natural style and embrace it. Except, of course when I’m sketching from life. That’s when people may get up and move – so I have to quicken my sketching pace, and that sense of urgency forces me to adopt that looser style.

I’ve just talked myself into a preferred style of sketching – situational sketching.

When I have time, I’ll sketch with the detail-centric style I gravitate towards.

When I’m rushed, I sketch in the loose style.

I’ll let the sketching situation dictate the style!
