Drawing Earthworld's Challenge
Day Twenty-One and Twenty-Two of my 365 Day Sketch Challenge
Continuing with day Twenty-One and Twenty-Two of my #Kick365 sketching challenge to draw people in ink and watercolour. A bit of a feeble creative output for these two days. I did start watching a Dylan Sara Portrait Line Drawing Session that I signed up for last year and didn’t get around to watching. But my concentration levels have been a struggle with this dose of the flu. I really want to sketch more, but the constant rain doesn’t inspire my creative spirit either.
Drawing Earthsworld Challenge
For day Twenty-One I did this female portrait from the Drawing Earthsworld Challenge from Facebook. I feel like I’m moving towards more simplified lines with these portraits. Keeping them to a minimum and relying more heavily on watercolour to show changes in tone rather than adding distracting and ineffective lines.
I don’t have a systematic approach to starting these Earthworld’s portraits. Sometimes I start with the glasses, and other times (this one for example), I started with the big shapes of the hair, and then built the face from that hair as an anchor-point.
I lifted out some of the white highlight areas on the dark side of the tee-shirt, which is a new approach for me. Ordinarily I’d leave the white areas unpainted, but lifting the watercolour out gives a more subtle approach to the fabric wrinkles.
For day Twenty-Two I did this male portrait from the Drawing Earthsworld Challenge from Facebook. It turned out a bit pale and insipid, but I do like the multi-coloured wrinkles on his neck.
I was messing around again with the colour triad of opera rose, hansa yellow medium, and cobalt turquoise light for the skin tone. I think I should have had a darker base layer, which would have been more fitting for this rugged looking cowboy.
Tried some hatching on the hat. Not really my style. Maybe I just need to get stuck into some hatching practice so it feels more natural.
