Day Fifty-Six of Sketching People

Continuing with day 56 of my #Kick365 sketching challenge to draw people in ink and watercolour. My first time attending this Wednesday speed sketching portrait session.

Musink Session Speed Sketching

First time at this new speed portrait session. But I only joined for the second half hour, and I was distracted with some other sketching. All poses at this session are the length of a music track. I did a first pass in with pencil to capture the big shapes and angles, and then I used my Noodler’s Flex Nib fountain pen.

The Carbon Ink I’m using takes longer to dry than my fine liners, so I didn’t add tonal shading. I was planning on adding shading after the event, but I created the black frames instead, and chose to leave the portraits as a black and white sketch… but then … I couldn’t resist adding a little spot of colour to the eyes!

I’m not using my flex nib pen to its full potential at moment. But I was experimenting with doing finer lines for cheek creases and wrinkles which was easy to achieve. As I get more comfortable with this nib, I’ll be able to add darker/thicker ink lines in specific areas. I just need to press harder on the nib to split the tines, so more ink flows. I like the size and feel of this Noodler’s fountain pen, but it does have a funny smell – a bit like vomit. Apparently, this is usual, because of the material it’s made from. So I just have to remember not to get my nose too close to the pen!

One of the songs in this Musink session, was Jake the Peg with his extra leg. This is a blast from the past, and as I knew the words I started singing along. It took me a couple of bars to realise that my Zoom mic wasn’t muted! Oh well! It made for a memorable first Musink Session… and it won’t be my last.
