What to expect at Fábrica
Fábrica Beach is part of Sitio da Fabrica village, and is next to Cacela Velha on the Cacela Peninsula. There’s a 1km expanse of white sand beach that you reach via one of the water taxis crossing the Ria Formosa.
We discovered this area of the coastline during our bike ride from Cabanas to Manta Rota. If cycling from Cabanas, it’s just before Cacela Velha (the village by the sea, not to be confused with Vila Nova de Cacela Velha, which is inland just north of the main road).
We weren’t prepared for a beach day, so we had to ogle the beach from the mainland. It looked like tranquility personified, and the kind of beach you wouldn’t have any problem finding an area of seclusion.
Taxi Boat to Fábrica Beach
There’s a slope leading down to the ferry boats, just past the sign with a timetable.
A return trip is 2 Euro, and the times of the service vary each month depending on the month. There a couple of different drop off points on the sand-bar.
Restaurant at Fábrica
There’s a restaurant on the mainland by the water taxi, and it’s the only one in the area. So if you go to the beach for the day and didn’t pack a picnic, you’ll need to travel back to the mainland to eat at the seafood Restaurant Marisqueira or at the snack bar.
We haven’t eaten there, but it gets a 3/5 review on Trip advisor. It has a broad mix of 5 star and 1 star reviews. So visit for yourself and make your own mind up—or pack a picnic.

Snack Bar at Fábrica
This is a handy little spot, located in the car park area of Fábrica beach.
They have a smattering of tables and chairs, and the coffee is pretty tasty.
And there’s also a toilet.
Where is Fabrica?
There’s a sign post showing the turn off to Fábrica. As you get closer to the beach, there’s a short – but steepish – hill leading down to it.
Good fun on a bike, but a bit of a slog walking back up it, especially in the heat.
Here’s a map of the East Algarve and the location of Fábrica. It’s a 20 minute cycle ride from Cabanas on the cycle path.
Sketching Fábrica
Last week (May 2025) I cycled to Fábrica and Cacela Velha for a sketch. I sat at the snack bar for a coffee and bolo de arroz (a muffin made with rice flour), and sketched some of my fellow lingerers.
