DTIYS Compilation Nov 22nd

Composite collection of weekly art challenges

Draw This in Your Style (DTIYS)

Each week Bernard Sombret posts a roundup of some of the week’s Draw This In Your Style challenges on Instagram. He also hosts his own weekly DTIYS challenge that he includes in his roundup.

Each week I’ve started to pick out a few of the scenes that appeal to me and fill up an A4 page with a few vignettes. It’s a good opportunity to practice different styles, and to experiment with different lines weights and level of detail to establish depth. I’m also trying using limited palettes or limited tones to see the impact on the scene.

These weekly challenges are also an excellent opportunity to experiment with page layout ideas. Something I haven’t really delved into yet.

I started doing these compilations last week, and here’s where you can see last week’s compilation. You can also click on the DTIYS or Draw This In Your Style tags to view all of them.

DTIYS Compilation Nov 22nd

This week there was only a couple of scenes I wanted to attempt.

Virtual Sketchers town

The inspiration photo from Virtual Sketchers was really complex, so I went super simple and geometric in the building shapes, and kept the tonal range and saturation pretty neutral.

Virtual Sketchers are a really popular weekly DTIYS challenge, and if you tag them in your instagram post, they may feature your image in their feed.

Bridge and river in ink and watercolour

I’m not much of a landscape artist, but I really enjoyed doing this scene because I love doing rocks.

This was a good exercise in using line and level of detail to depict depth in a scene. I think this might be this week’s favourite.

cafe called the Coffee Pot in ink and watercolour

This was a bit of a twee scene. But I liked the challenge of doing a sky and foreground, with the focal point in the mid-ground.

I think my favourite part of this was the foliage and trees. To me, the scene feels very illustrative, and I think that might be my natural style. I do like the little details like the menu board and small bench.

I was also happy with the loose sky. But the colour is wrong or two saturated and is too distracting and bright.

Here’s the roundup from Bernard, so you can visit his instagram profile and see the latest DTIYS challenges. He posts a new roundup every Friday.
