Back in June I spent the day sketching at the Tavira market with the Algarve Urban Sketcher’s Group. Our sketches were being used for an exhibition at the Tavira Mercado to promote Mediterranean cuisine and encourage people to shop for fresh produce and food the locals markets rather than the supermarkets.

The sketches were a mix of people, the market, and the different produce. And I was happy that three of my people sketches got selected for the exhibition.

It was an impressive looking exhibition with an amazing variety of sketching styles from the members of the Algarve Urban Sketching group.

The mayor of Tavira was at the market to open the event, and a group of volunteers from the local council were there to hand out two different sets of 6 free postcards featuring the urban sketches.

The postcard featuring my sketch was of our favourite stall holder. He uses a little pad and pen to calculate the customer’s bill, and there’s no sense of urgency with this process. I love his relaxed approach to customer service. What’s the hurry anyway?

I went to the event on the event weekend, and was happy to return a couple of weeks later when my friend Sparks flew in for a few days to wish me an early happy birthday.
