Day One Hundred and Twenty-Four of Sketching People

Continuing on with day 124 of my #Kick365 sketching challenge to draw people in ink and watercolour. Urban sketching at the hospital and a couple of biro portrait sketches.

Urban Sketching People at the Hospital

Return trip to the hospital for a check up on my broken hand, and got there an hour early – too early to check in. I sketched the man sitting next to me in the waiting room and then as I was sitting in the front row of the admissions area, I was able to sketch people going up to the receptionist to check in for their appointments.

I chose a limited palette to add watercolour to this sketch at home. It never ceases to amaze me the variety of colours you can eke out from a limited palette, and still create some colour harmony in a sketch.

Biro Portrait Sketches

I had a go at a couple of portraits from the Drawing Earthsworld Challenge on Facebook today. I really have taken quite a shine to this sketch medium. I’m not sure how long I’ll be enamoured with it, but I figure, the more sketch practice I can get with faces can’t hurt.

Even though this sketching technique is not how I plan on urban sketching people quickly, it’s still great practice for really seeing tonal variances in these references images, and trying to capture it with ink.

I’ve been watching a couple of different YouTube videos about how to use vertical and cross hatching effectively. Even though I’ve only spent a week doing biro with hatching effects, my technique has god a little bit more streamlined and less confusing and messy.
