Urban Sketching at the Cafe Thursday

I took a friend out to afternoon tea on Thursday afternoon. I had a little window of opportunity to sketch before she arrived. But once the she, and the food arrived, I was too busy with catching up and stuffing my face to open up my sketchbook again. But I’m glad I was able to capture this single sketch.

Sometimes I do a lot of sketches during a session, and like to focus on skills building, but in this instance this sketch plays the role of a journal entry. I’ve captured a memory, and when I look back at this sketch years from now, I’ll be able to recall my afternoon with my friend and the joy of eating afternoon tea.

Urban Sketching at the Steering Alignment Garage Friday

Back to the reality of day to day chores! I knew we’d have to wait while we had our steering realigned. I hate sitting around and doing nothing, and would rather sketch than doom-scrolling! So I packed my sketchbook and pen, and sketched some of the other customers at the garage.

I also had a go at sketching some of the garage machinery and tires. I liked this scene because it looked like a giant size Hasselblad Camera. Not my usual subject, but it’s good to mix it up. Any object or subject is an opportunity to practice loose lines, and it keeps me from getting jaded by sketching too many people…

… To be honest, I don’t think I’ll ever get jaded by sketching people. They’re just so much fun, and you have the opportunity to capture or embellish postures or feelings.

Urban Sketching on the Boardwalk Sunday

At least it’s not raining today! I had a crafty morning working on a junk journal (a very recent obsession inspired by my brother and his junk journalling adventures), but because the sun was shining I forced myself outside to appreciate the sunshine, and to sketch some people walking along the boardwalk. Luckily some of them were doing a leisurely stroll, so although I had to sketch really quickly I managed to capture them in motion.

I did the boatober boat sketching challenge last year, but have steered clear of boats this year – mainly because it’s been raining a lot. So I sketched one of the small boats in the estuary, and like the loose feel of it. I saw an Instagram post the other day of an urban sketcher talking about how he spends more time looking at his subject and less time looking at the page he’s sketching on. And that popped into my mind today, and this boat sketch is an example of this approach to sketching.

Got a call from MOH to meet him for a Sunday afternoon cocktail, so my sketch adventure was cut short. But it was good to get out and sketch, and have had a serious word with myself about getting out and sketching more now that the sunny days are here again.
